Airports: More than 12 million passengers welcomed at the end of August 2022

With a recovery rate of 74%

Morocco’s airports registered 12,294,484 passengers at the end of August 2022, ONDA said in a press release. It also shows 108,640 airport movements recorded over the same period. In the same vein, Morocco’s airports continue to show growing recovery rates compared to the same period of 2019, welcoming 74% of passengers and 78% of airport movements, underlines the Office. During the month of August 2022 alone, the airports of the Kingdom experienced a volume of commercial traffic which reached 2,473,495 passengers and 18,918 airport movements, i.e. successive recovery rates of 94 and 91% compared to the same time of year 2019.

In more detail, Casablanca Mohammed V airport welcomed 4,659,571 passengers via 42,288 flights at the end of August, i.e. recovery rates of around 67 and 69% respectively compared to the same period of 2019. This airport has recorded in August alone air traffic of 957,146 passengers through 7,522 flights, i.e. 82% of passenger air traffic and 79% of flights recorded during the month of August 2019. According to ONDA, most airports have reached , or even exceeded, during the month of August 2022, the volume of passenger air traffic recorded during the same period of 2019. This upward trend was noticed from the start of the summer season, estimates ONDA, specifying that during the period from June 5 to the end of August, several airports exceeded the level of activity of 2019, with recovery rates that exceeded 100% (Agadir: 111%, Tangier: 127%, Fez: 115%, Nador: 142% , Oujda: 129%, Tetouan: 359% and Essaouira: 139%).

Recovery also strengthened at the end of August for airports in the North (i.e. Tangier and Tetouan) and Oriental (i.e. Oujda and Nador) regions, which experienced recovery rates greater than or equal to 100% compared to the same period of 2019 (Tétouan: 364%, Oujda: 115%, Nador: 108%, Tangier: 100%). As for domestic traffic, its recovery rate was 67% at the end of August with 1,334,903 registered passengers. This rate reached 76% in the eighth month of 2022 compared to the same period of 2019, with 224,973 passengers welcomed during this month. For its part, international air traffic posted 10,959,581 passengers at the end of August, i.e. a recovery rate of 74% compared to the same period of 2019. During the month of August 2022, the airports of the Kingdom recorded 2,248,522 passengers, i.e. a recovery rate of 97% compared to the same period of 2019.

“Europe, which represents more than 83% of international air traffic, recorded during the month of August, a recovery rate of around 105% compared to August 2019”, explains the same source. During the month of August, there were 18,918 airport movements, compared to 20,678 movements recorded during the same period of 2019, representing a recovery rate of 91%. Air freight stood at 46,760 tons at the end of August, representing a recovery rate of 74%. During the month of August, air freight recorded a recovery rate of 80% compared to the same period of 2019, accumulating a volume of 5,105 tons.
